Find the right place for your skip.
Decide where the skip could stand before choosing a delivery date. The answer affects access, permissions and the quote.
Entirely on private land.
In Scotland, a skip entirely on private land does not need a road skip permit. You still need the landowner’s agreement and a safe, suitable position. Shared parking or a communal driveway needs particular care: check who can authorise its use.
Ask the supplier about the surface, support and delivery route. A driveway that holds a parked car is not automatically suitable for a skip delivery vehicle.
On the public road or footpath.
Contact the relevant council about skip permission. The supplying operator should confirm how the application is handled, what the permit covers and the conditions for the position.
Do not reserve a road space or arrange delivery on the assumption approval will follow. An application, a quote and an approved permit are different things.
Parking and access need separate checks.
Where the proposed position involves a parking bay or restriction, ask the council whether a suspension or other approval is needed. Do not treat a skip permit as automatic permission to occupy any bay.
Tell the operator about overhead cables, trees, gates, changes in level and any limits on vehicle access. Keep entrances and pedestrian routes clear. Exact clearances depend on the vehicle and container.
