Compare the four sizes in our range. The right option depends on your waste, available space and the sizes that can be supplied to your postcode.

A little local planning helps

The Village and the town centre need their own access checks.

The council’s Cumbernauld Village appraisal describes Main Street, Baronhill and The Wynd, with narrow wynds off Main Street and a winding, sloping street layout. For a Village address, ask the operator to assess the actual approach rather than assuming a small skip means a small delivery vehicle.

A useful delivery checklist

The full address and where the skip would sit
Any gates, narrow entrances or parked-car pinch points
Overhead cables, branches and other obstacles
The waste type, including any heavy or bulky items

A photo of the proposed position can help the operator assess access. Delivery is confirmed after those details are checked.

01

For a Village property, describe the whole approach

Send a clear description of the entrance, slope, proposed standing surface and any overhead obstruction. Give measurements where possible and ask which delivery vehicle would be used. The historic appraisal is useful background; it cannot confirm present-day clearances or grant permission for your chosen spot.

If the intended position is on the public road, allow for North Lanarkshire’s permit process. For work affecting a building or protected feature, check the relevant property permissions separately; a skip permit does not approve building works.

02

For managed premises, identify the vehicle entrance

For a town-centre job, give the premises name, unit and servicing entrance. Ask the manager about the agreed standing area and when delivery and collection can take place. A pedestrian route to the front door is not enough information for a lorry delivery.

The council’s town vision describes future changes. Use current site instructions when planning access. Choose among 2, 4, 6 and 8 yards only after the operator has considered both the waste and the delivery arrangement; none of those sizes guarantees access to a particular address.

Cumbernauld placement guide

Driveway or road?
Here’s where to start.

A skip on a public road needs the council’s Section 85 permission. Agree the exact position and who will apply before arranging delivery.

Check the council guidance

Council information checked 10 September 2026.

Allow time for permission

Allow for the council’s published 28 days’ notice. The application form also refers to 20 working days; confirm the applicable lead time, fees and dates directly.

Have the position ready

Prepare a location plan, proposed dates and the applicant and supplying company’s details. Permission depends on the position and other planned works.

Private land is different

A skip entirely on private land does not normally need a road skip permit. Confirm permission, surface suitability and lorry access.

Load it right

Know what goes in.
Before you begin.

Tell us what you’re clearing. The waste type matters just as much as the skip size, and acceptance must be agreed before booking.

Everyday project waste

Usually suitable when agreed:

  • Non-hazardous household clutter
  • Wood and timber
  • Garden cuttings
  • Light renovation waste

Let’s check first

May need a separate waste route:

  • Soil, rubble and concrete
  • Plasterboard
  • Mattresses and carpets
  • Upholstered seating and electricals

Keep these out

Excluded from standard skip hire:

  • Asbestos or suspected asbestos
  • Paint, liquids and chemicals
  • Gas bottles and batteries
  • Fuel, oil and clinical waste

Keep loads level with the rim. Heavy waste has weight limits; upholstered seating and electricals must not go into a standard mixed load without an agreed authorised route.
